After coming to Canada from New Zealand to complete a Ph.D. in Shakespeare, Nicola Winstanley didn’t complete it, but stayed in Canada anyway. She then worked for various Canadian publishers including Dundurn Press and Kids Can Press and freelanced as a photo and permission editor. Following the birth of her daughter, she started writing for children. Her first book Cinnamon Baby was shortlisted for the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award/Marilyn Baillie Picture Books Award in 2012 and her second book The Pirate’s Bed is forthcoming from Tundra. As well as having the role of book review editor for the HLR, Nicola teaches writing in the School of Media Studies and Information Technology at Humber College.
